Course Objectives

Managing human resources is critical to the success of modern business organizations. The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of human resource management especially from a strategic perspective. The topics covered in this class include staffing, compensation, performance appraisal, training, labor relations, and global human resource practices.

Methods of Instruction

The class format will be a combination of lectures, class discussions, and student presentations. The first 90 minutes will be used for chapter reviews. Every week, one or more students will be assigned to make presentations of the chapters and to lead relevant class discussion. I will provide complementary lectures after that. The latter 90 minutes will be used for case discussions and other activities to deepen our knowledge and to apply the basic principles to real world situations.

Methods and Criteria of Evaluation

Grades will be determined based on class contributions (attendance, participation, and presentations) (50%) and a final report examination (term paper) (50%).

Class contributions

You can learn many things not only from the textbook and lectures, but also from information and insights given by other classmates of diverse background. Therefore, your contribution to the class is important. Class contribution includes attendance, participation in the class discussions and presentation.

Presentation

During the quarter, each student should make at least one presentation. This presentation should include following components.

  • Overview of the assigned textbook chapters.
  • Key points, principles or takeaways from the chapters.
  • Discussion questions that would deepen our understanding of the content.
  • You may want to bring handouts, presentation slides, newspaper or magazine articles, etc. in your presentation. You are also responsible to lead class discussions after the presentation.

Final report examination

Term paper will be assigned as a form of take home examination. At the last day of the class (May 22) or earlier, I will provide you with exam questions. Then you have a week or so to make answers in your home, and are expected to turn them in as a term paper to the IBA office. To be successful in this final report examination, you should try “Review and Discussion Questions” in each chapter of the textbook. Similar questions may be provided for the take home examination.
