Methods of Instruction

The class format will be a combination of short presentations, lectures, class discussions, and other exercises. In order to make the most of our class time, be sure to read assigned chapters and readings before the class. I assume that all participants in my class have already read and understood the content of the chapters and readings when class starts. Then I am open to any questions or discussions regarding the study topics.

At the begging of each class, one or two students are expected to give a short speech (about ten to twelve minutes) that includes the summary of the assigned chapter (the book chapter). The classmates may ask questions. The instructor, along with the presenters, will give the answers.

The next section will be based on discussions on assigned articles (Homework assignments). The class is expected to actively take part and express personal views and ideas on the given issue. No particular student will be designated for the discussions but rather the instructor expects the entire class as volunteers. However, in case of absence of volunteers, the instructor will randomly appoint any student.

This will be an open discussion. On top of comprehending the assigned articles, you may share your relevant experience, and issues that you want to discuss in class. You may also want to bring handouts, newspaper or magazine articles, and so forth as supplemental material.

Methods and Criteria of Evaluation

Grades will be determined based on presentations, homework and contributions to class (80%) and a final report paper (term paper) (20%).

Class contribution. You can learn many things not only from the textbook, materials and lectures, but also from information and insights given by other classmates with diverse background. Therefore, your contribution to our class is important. Class contribution includes attendance, participation in the class discussions and presentations.

Homework Assignment. Each week, create short answers to the questions below for the prospective ‘Readings’ and submit the answers to me at the begging of the class. For example, if we will cover Chapter X next class, complete and turn in your answers for Chapter X ‘Reading’ at the beginning of next class. Points will be reduced if you submit the answers after the class. By this homework, I will be certain that all of you who attend the class have already read Chapter X and are ready for the active class participation.

Please prepare and submit the hard copy of your answer, not via email attachment. Be sure to include your name, student number and submission date.
