KONAN UNIVERSITY EBA PROGRAM Autumn Semester 2007

Workshop II

Meeting Time: Friday, 13:00-14:30

Course Objectives

This workshop is designed to provide you with a variety of perspectives that are important and useful in developing your career after the completion of the EBA program. Especially, this workshop emphasizes obtaining an international perspective, acquiring knowledge and skills in organization management, and becoming aware of yourself deeply through self-assessment exercises. In short, this workshop is aimed at developing business leaders who meet “global standards.”

Course Materials
  • Self-Assessment Library v.3.3 (CD-ROM) by Stephen P Robbins (ISBN:0132217937, Publisher: Prentice Hall)(available at the Konan U. book store)
  • Reading assignments (will be distributed in class or at EBA office)
Course Structure

This course is roughly divided into two parts. The first 10 sessions (PART 1) cover the major topics related to career design (especially from the international perspective)
and last 4 sessions (PART 2) are instructed by Ms. Kanae Hashimoto and cover practical issues for job search (Shu-katsu).

The use of Meru-ben

To take attendance and conduct various class activities, this class uses Meru-ben, a computer-based class management system using mobile phones. I assume all of the students have their mobile phones, but let me know if any of you do not have one.

Student Responsibilities
  • Every week, you are required to complete assignments (e.g., reading assignments, homework) in advance and be prepared to various class activities.
Grading for Session 1 – 10 (Total 100pt)
  • Self-assessment paper: 50 pt
  • Homework: 30pt
  • Class participation (attendance and contribution): 20pt
Assignments

Homework assignment

Each week, homework assignment will be announced on the webpage. You are required to complete the homework (it often uses self-assessment CD-ROM) in a week and be sure to bring the results to the next class.

Self-assessment paper

The purpose of the self-assessment paper is to understand yourself deeply through various self-assessment inventories and use such self-awareness in planning your future career. The self-assessment paper should include at least (but not limited to) the following four elements.

  1. Results of your self-assessment (what is your basic personality, what are your current managerial skill levels, what are your strengths and weaknesses, etc.)
  2. Analyses of the job and organization (or industry) which you want to engage in or enter into in the future (characteristics of the job, organizational culture, industry characteristics, etc).
  3. Fit analysis (how well your current value, personality or skills fit into the job or organizations that you analyzed in part 2)
  4. Your career strategy (based on the analyses from 1 to 3, how you plan your future career. What kind of skills or knowledge you will obtain either before and after the graduation).

Besides the self-assessment CD-ROM and various sources of information about existing jobs and organizations such as books, magazines, newspapers, and internet websites, you may want to approach someone (your friends, family, senior students, or business people) and conduct interviews to ask about you (for self-assessment) and the work they do (for job/organization analysis). It may also be helpful for you to talk with the senior students who already have job offers. This would enrich your analyses and the quality of self-assessment paper.

  • You may write the paper either in English or Japanese.
  • The lengths of the paper should be 4 to 6 pages (no more than 6 pages) in A4 format (it does not count title page).
  • Submit your paper to the EBA office by the end of this semester (before the final examination period).
